Apparently the Subaru Forester has the option of Subaru’s camera-based awareness system. It just doesn’t work in black. Is this some issue with reflections off the hood?

Maybe that it can’t “see” the black?. I remember the pallet wrapper i used at a work, whenever we wrapped stacks of black buckets we had to tape over the sensor because it’d see nothing and just wrap the bottom 3 times and stop.

I doubt it’s a technical issue; you'd see the same issue with any dark colors. More likely it’s just a manufacturing efficiency thing. They probably didn’t plan a production run with the eyesight available when they had the spray booth opened for black. I bet if you poke around you’ll find the system available on their other cars in the same paint.

Weird...but you can get Eyesight on a black Legacy or Outback.

I think you are on to something. Black does not seem to be a very popular color for the Forester. White, blue, silver, and grey seem to dominate. Since Subaru’s production capacitiy is pretty small compared to a lot of other folks, I bet they prioritize things like this.

Thanks to Toyota changing the manufacturing world everyone does stuff like this. If a combo of packages are bought rarely and require different MWIs or quals by the line guys it’s possible they won’t schedule a run where there’s qualified people on that line to allow all possible combos. If they’re truly bought in to the LEAN/six sigma/belt stuff they won't even make it a pay extra option.

Not 100% sure that’s what’s going on here, could be a ‘can't see black’ thing or a heat dissipation thing, but I’d lean towards manufacturing.

Hahahahahaha I hadn’t even considered that.

Apparently, it’s an issue with extreme heat. During hot weather testing, it was found that the roof of the Crystal Black test vehicles got too hot which compromised the operation of the EyeSight system.

This is a 2nd generation EyeSight problem. The new 3rd generation EyeSight system does not have this issue, but the Forester hasn’t been upgraded yet.

It’s a heat issue with the 2nd generation EyeSight system. Crystal Black allowed roof temperatures to get too hot for the safe operation of the system.

This has been fixed with the introduction of the 3rd generation EyeSight system. It’s been implemented on the 2015 Outback, Legacy, Impreza and XV Crosstrek, and on the 2016 WRX. For some reason, the 2015 and 2016 Forester did not get the upgraded system.
